Safe Haven

Safe Haven began in 1998 as a collaborative program between the Clara Martin Center, Vermont Psychiatric Survivors, and the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill, to provide a transitional living residence for homeless and mentally ill individuals.  As of winter 2014, the Clara Martin Center has sole oversight of the facility and programming.  Safe Haven primarily serves residents of Orange County, Washington County and the upper towns of Windsor County. Safe Haven provides a place to live within the community while working on personal goals in a safe and supportive recovery oriented environment. Safe Haven is staffed 24 hours, primarily by those that have experienced mental health issues.

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must have a mental health or substance use diagnosis, with priority given to those with a mental health diagnosis
• If beds are available, homeless individuals without mental health or substance use diagnosis may be admitted
• Meets current HUD definition of homelessness and have documentation of such
• May stay up to two years (average length of stay is 8 months)
