Dr. Brewster Martin Award

This award is dedicated in the name of a caring country doctor whose support of the Clara Martin Center, and more importantly, the citizens of the greater Orange County area, was strong and will always be remembered.

Dr. Brewster Martin was a man who lived each day and enjoyed his life. Dr. Martin served on our Board of Directors since the passing of his wife Clara Martin. He was full of humor; telling stories of his love for the stage or a loving story of his family and friends. He always asked “How are you?” and would quickly make you feel the bright light of the day in whatever you presented to him. He was proud of everyone and lived to promote happiness and strength in each person. His demonstrated love for life penetrated the very essence of the community and this organization.

Dr. Martin believed in the mind-body connection to physical and spiritual health. He lived this philosophy in his practice as a physician and in his support to the agency. Dr. Martin was one man who contributed to the spirit of the Board of Directors, all of whom support the mission of a caring and responsive community of providers.

It is the commitment of the Board of Directors to keep the strength of the organization focused on our future and to hold true to the spirit of those who helped to create this solid foundation in which we all stand on today. The commitment of the Board of Directors is to the community and the staff who serves our community with courage and strength, all of which is essential to the success of each citizen.

Aida Busconi, CVSAS Practice Manager

Many staff have had the pleasure of working with Aida Busconi as the Practice Manager with Clara Martin Center at Central Vermont Substance Abuse Services.  It’s not a secret that a Practice Manager does a lot of everything.  HR, Avatar/EHR, grants, coordinating with other entities/community partners, working with clients around their billing issues/concerns, managing administrative staff, supporting all staff...  and the list goes on and on and on.

  • “Honestly, I am not sure when she sleeps (and I can attest to that because she will often send emails at 4 or 5am).

  • She greets every client with a smile and such compassion.
  • Aida has been with CVSAS for years and has helped hundreds of clients and staff to stand on their own!
  • Aida is my right and left hand.  She is always willing to try something new or again, but is also not afraid to speak up about why something has not worked in the past.

A Special Note From Adam -

After several days of reflection on winning the Brewster Martin Excellence award, I wanted to write and e-mail to those I work with who have supported me and directly contributed to my success at Clara Martin.

This is what I wish I had said when I was giving my impromptu speech - if my cerebral cortex had been firing at all and being drowned out by my emotional (limbic) system that was lit up like a Christmas tree struck by lightening.

Our TAY program is based on the resiliency model of fostering success with the clients we work with. Primary pillars of the resiliency model are; caring relationships, opportunity to succeed, and supportive environment. Look at those pillars for a second. That is exactly what Clara Martin does for me in my professional life.

There is no way that I could do the work I do if I did not feel supported and cared for by my peers in the agency. There is no way that I could be effective in my job if the environment was not flexible, encouraging,  open minded and sensitive to my needs as well as the needs of the populations I serve. When I wake up in the morning I am fired up to go to work with people I care about in an agency that inspires me and allows me to work outside the traditional “sit on a couch and  have clients tell you how they feel” box of treatment (My band of Merry Young Men would last exactly 1 to 2 sessions with that approach).

If you as my peers and supervisors think I’m a success at my job please know that it is because of you all and the agency culture. I am a piece in the puzzle of the work I do, but this puzzle is way bigger than one piece.

They say “it takes a village to raise a child”. Well it takes and agency to grow and nurture an effective therapist.

Of note- In our job we often work with clients in a pure unfettered emotional state. Often those states are with very difficult and what some would call “negative” emotions. On Thursday night (those who were there) got to observe a pure emotional state in me. It was Pride/honor (sprinkled with some stunned disbelief). You all got to observe a career highlight of mine and were part of a memory that I will take out and turn over and savor for years to come (I’m betting my whole life). Thank you all for this honor and your part in it.
